Name

Exploring an Artist's Archive: Philomene Bennett

Description

Friday, May 22 | 5-6 pm
Spencer Art Reference Library | Free

Join library staff as we explore the libraryโ€™s unique collections of files related to Kansas Cityโ€™s artists, with a focus on what one artist file can tell us about an artistโ€™s career, as well as the artist and the creative culture of the time. In this program, weโ€™ll explore the materials that Philomene Bennett donated to the library to create her artist file in 2014 and how these materials can be used to learn about her art, advocacy, and career. Bennett passed away in 2024, but her impact continues to be felt through her work and the community she fostered among artists in Kansas City. One week later, weโ€™ll gather at the Kansas City Artists Coalition to continue the conversation about artist archives and how to think about documenting your own career.
