Name

Surface Tension: Sandy Skoglundย in Conversation

Description

Saturday, Oct. 4 | 2-3 pm
Tickets: $3 | Atkins Auditorium

For more than 50 years, artist Sandy Skoglund has merged sculpture, installation, and photography to create fantastical scenes for the camera. Her elaborate scenariosโ€” constructed by hand and inhabited by live models and an overabundance of objectsโ€”bend reality and suspend us in an uncanny logic where two worlds, seemingly at odds, converge. Playful yet puzzling, Skoglundโ€™s work taps into pop culture and American consumerism, the psychology of space, and our subconscious anxieties.

Join Sandy Skoglund in conversation with Senior Curator of Photography April Watson for a lively discussion about her creative process, the inspiration behind such iconic works as Revenge of the Goldfishย (on view at the Nelson-Atkins this fall), and the evolution of a career that has continually pushed the limits of constructed imagery.

Skoglundโ€™s visit includes a workshopย with local teachers on Oct. 3. Their resulting collaborative installation will be on view for the day, and during Night/Shift at the Nelson-Atkins on Oct. 9.ย

Skoglundโ€™s work has been exhibited, collected, and commissioned by museums across the globe and featured in numerous publications. Parallel to her artistic practice, Skoglund has taught generations of students; she serves as Distinguished Professor of Arts, Media, and Culture at Rutgers University.

This program is made possible through a generous gift from Suzie Aron and Joseph Levin.ย
