Description

Hokusai and Related Artists in the MFA, Boston Collection
Dr. Sarah E. Thompson, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Friday, Oct. 18 | 10:30 am–Noon | Training Room and Galleries L13-15
Free | Advance registration required

Focusing on works in the exhibition, Hokusai: Waves of Inspiration from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, we will take the example of one great artist, Katsushika Hokusai, and consider the many ways in which other artists have taken his work as a source of inspiration for their own creations. Students, of course, learn directly, often by copying their teacher’s work. Competitors may emulate a rival artist by using similar visual ideas and then add new twists to push those concepts even further. Even without any personal contact, an artist’s work may be a source of inspiration to other artists, both during the original artist’s lifetime and far beyond it.

Thompson is Curator of Japanese Art at the MFA Boston where she has served since 2004. She has curated numerous exhibitions, including Hokusai: Waves of Inspiration from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on view at the Nelson-Atkins Sept. 21 through Jan. 5, 2025.

This seminar is designed for advanced students. Please contact 1Art@nelson-atkins.org with questions.
