Book Discussion: The Printmaker's Daughter

Description

Thursday, Nov. 21 | 6–7 pm
Spencer Art Reference Library, Reading Room

Join Nelson-Atkins staff members Yayoi Shinoda, Assistant Curator of Japanese Art, Rachel Freeman, Conservator of Paper & Asian Art, and Stephanie Lawrence, library programs specialist, to discuss Katherine Govier’s novel The Printmaker’s Daughter, 2011. In support of the museum’s featured exhibition Hokusai:Waves of Inspiration from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, this free book discussion will introduce you to the little-known story of Hokusai’s artist daughter, Oei.

Govier brings their complex relationship and colorful 19th-century Edo (Tokyo) world to life through extensive research skillfully woven into a compelling work of historical fiction. Publishers Weekly stated, “Lavishly researched and brilliant…Govier astonishes throughout in her ability to write epic themes intimately…lyrical, absorbing, and intense.” Oei, a dedicated and prolific artist herself, is long-rumored to have had a hand in the iconic master’s work--let’s discuss the possibilities!
